Franschhoek Literary Festival 2019
Posted on the March 15th, 2019
Calling all bookworms and literature lovers – the Franschhoek Literary Festival 2019 (FLF) is the place to be during the third weekend of May. The Festival commences on the morning of Friday 17th May and ends on the afternoon of Sunday 19th May and promises an array of events hosted by literary legends from all over South Africa and even a few renowned authors from across the world.
The Franschhoek valley turns into a buzzing haven of book-lovers as festival-goers walk from one event to the next. With a wide range of panelists from authors and journalists, to editor and publishers, the conversations over the weekend will cover varying topics; drawing in audiences, young and old.
The first Franschhoek Literary Festival took place over a decade ago, and since then this much-loved Franschhoek festival has been bringing together great minds to inform and inspire South African audiences. The festival was designed to encourage a culture of reading by establishing the FLF Library Fund, which raises money for school and local community libraries.
There’s something for every niche, from food to politics, history and more. Literary enthusiasts and budding writers can attend a number of talks such as ‘One-on-one: Research, fast checking and consistency’ with Ingrid Winterbach and Tony Peake, or attend a memoir writing workshop by author Dianne Stewart. These workshops cover everything that an aspiring writer needs to know: from learning how to write perfectly short snippets for social media, to writing thousands of words for books, and all types of feature writing in between.
No Franschhoek festival would be complete without a tantalising array of food. Rub shoulders with South Africa’s greatest literary minds at Franschhoek’s top restaurants, and make sure to sample the delicious Porcupine Ridge wines, who are a main sponsor of the festival. Experience a party-like atmosphere and great food surrounded by your literary icons.
Looking to end the weekend off with a bang? The final event on Sunday afternoon usually includes a concert and even a three-course meal at Café Bon Bon where you can enjoy a spirited festival music finale. Keep an eye on WebTickets to book your spot. Take a look at the full programme here.
