Unique Activities in Franschhoek

Posted on the November 10th, 2017

At this time of year, when the sun is shining and the Festive Season spirit is on the rise, holidaymakers are often on the lookout for fun activities in Franschhoek. Rather than sticking to the stock-standard group wine-tasting tours and long lunches, why not step out of your comfort zone and enjoy something a bit different. Here, we highlight a few of the most unique things to do in Franschhoek.

Scootours are one of the most adventurous and quirky ways to explore the Franschhoek Winelands. The ideal activity for a family day out, a romantic date in nature, a kid’s birthday party, or an exciting team-building session, Franschhoek Scootours are suitable for a wide variety of occasions.

Two options are available: the Franschhoek Adventure Scootour, and the Franschhoek Family Scootour. On the Franschhoek Adventure Scootour, free-wheel along sections of the historic 1825 Holloway Pass and 1819 Cats Path ox trail in the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve and enjoy spectacular views over the Franschhoek Valley. For this option, riders need to be confident, as the single track path is rocky.

Great for Big Ones and Little Ones, the Franschhoek Family Scootour takes place on the gentle slopes of several Franschhoek wine farms. The jeep track riding route is easy to navigate and the only requirement is that you are able to ride a bike. Kids aged 10 and over can ride their very own scooter, and those between 4 and 9 can hop on their parent’s one.

Babylonstoren Garden Tour

Nestled within 3.5 hectares of cultivated fruit and vegetables, the spectacular gardens at Babylonstoren were inspired by the historic Company’s Garden in Cape Town. Home to over 300 varieties of plants, all of which are edible, the garden provides the two farm-to-form restaurants with daily fresh produce.

Daily guided tours allow you to explore this beautiful attraction for the price of just R10 during the week R20 over the weekend. Consisting of a gentle, meandering walk which spans over 3km, the tour starts at the Farm Shop and is led by experienced and enthusiastic guides.

Make sure to wear comfortable shoes for the walk, and remember to bring along a hat and sunscreen in summer, and Wellingtons and an umbrella in winter.
